Kim, an art major, noticed a small sculpture for sale in Atlanta’s High Museum of Art gift shop. It was a feminine form, nothing terribly original, she thought. Kim picked up the piece to turn it over and view the price tag: $1300. She carefully set if back on the shelf and remarked to her art teacher, who was next to her, “That sells for thirteen hundred dollars? I could have made that.” The art teacher looked at Kim. “But you didn’t,” he said. Ability and desire do not always lead to producing a result. We can draw inspiration from Thoreau’s Walden: “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one adventures confidently in the direction of his dreams…he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.”
